Gemfields Narrows Losses as Emerald Production Recovers at Kagem Mine

Lower costs and resumed operations at its flagship emerald mine supported results despite declining revenues in the colored gemstone sector.

Gemfields reported improved financial stability in 2025 despite a challenging market environment, as the company managed to reduce its losses while facing declining revenue across the colored gemstone sector.

The mining group recorded a net loss of $50.9 million, significantly lower than the $100.8 million loss reported in the previous year. The improvement was largely driven by the reopening of the Kagem emerald mine in Zambia, along with effective cost-reduction strategies implemented across the business.

📉 Revenue Decline Amid Weak Gemstone Demand

Despite narrowing losses, Gemfields’ revenue dropped by 32% to $135.1 million, reflecting weaker global demand for emeralds and rubies, as well as reduced availability of high-quality stones.

Production challenges at the Montepuez ruby mine in Mozambique also impacted performance. The company cited delays in launching a new processing plant, combined with increased levels of illegal mining activity, as key factors affecting output and supply.

💰 Cost Optimization and Strategic Adjustments

In response to market pressure, Gemfields successfully reduced operating costs to $128.9 million, compared to $156.2 million in 2024. A major contribution came from the sale of its Fabergé business for $50 million, alongside broader efficiency measures.

The company also improved its financial position by cutting net debt from $80.4 million to $39.3 million, strengthening its balance sheet in a volatile market.

📊 Market Pressure and Auction Performance

According to CEO Sean Gilbertson, 2025 remained a difficult year for the company, with operational disruptions at both Kagem and Montepuez affecting production levels, auction frequency, and cash flow.

Gemfields held seven gemstone auctions during the year, generating approximately $129 million. While supply constraints limited availability, pricing remained relatively stable for high-quality emeralds and premium rubies, indicating continued demand at the top end of the market.

⚠️ Outlook for 2026

Looking ahead, Gemfields expects ongoing challenges in early 2026. The company continues to address technical issues at its new processing facility while closely monitoring geopolitical developments that could impact costs and global gemstone demand.

Rising tensions in key regions, including the Middle East, are already contributing to increased operational expenses and may further influence market conditions.
